Power projects aim to generate 4,000 megawatts by 2020

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) - The government is carrying out 18 power projects to generate more than 4,000 megawatts of electricity by 2020, according to the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy.
In its annual report, the ministry says Cambodia consumed 2,788 million kilowatt/hours in 2011. Thailand and Vietnam supplied 1,765 million kilowatt/hours, almost two thirds, while Cambodia generated 1,023 million kilowatt/hours.
The projects being carried out between 2010 and 2020 are targeted to generate 4,073.3 megawatts and include:
    - Kam Chay hydropower plant in Kampot province (193.2 megawatts) launched on December 7 last year
    - Sihanoukville coal-fired plant (200 megawatts) with first phase to be launched in June next year with capacity increased from 2016
    - Kirirom III hydropower plant Koh Kong province (18 megawatts) launched in September
    - Atai hydropower plant in Pursat province (120 megawatts) to be launched later this year
    - Ta Tai hydropower plant in Koh Kong province (246 megawatts) to be partly launched in late 2013
    - Russey Chrom Krom hydropower plant in Koh Kong province (228 megawatts) to be launched in late 2013
    - Sihanoukville second coal-fired plant (700 megawatts) to be launched in phases in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019
    - Cheay Areng hydropower plant (108 megawatts), to be launched in 2017
    - Sambor hydropower plant (450 megawatts of total 2,600 megawatts) to be launched in 2019
    - Stung Treng hydropower plant (900 megawatts), to be launched in 2020
    - Sihanoukville third coal-fired plant (400 megawatts) to be launched in 2020
